A disturbing trend

I went to Dominicks for lunch today, and as I fumbled to slide my credit card and pick up the pen for the pressure sensitive screen, I wondered:

Why is it every merchant these days requires the customer to slide his or her own credit card when cashier can do it much more quickly and accurately? The cashier knows what buttons to press without looking, knows which way the stripe needs to face, etc, etc.
