My New Favorite Song

Well, you know, they always say, nothing stays the same except change. For years, people have heard me say the best song of all time is Amarillo By Morning. That might have had something to do with memories of smoking cigars and driving west with Pete and Sei. (Hmmm...that western theme...)

However, also for some years now, it seems to me every time I hear "Drift Away," I think, you know, that's a dang good song!

Last night, after work, I decided no more excuses, I just had to stop at the store. So, I did, after a long day, driving out to Geneva from Chicago, tired, hungry, still needing to take the dog out--and 8:00 by the time I got out of the store. Thinking, you know, this kind of sucks. I'd rather be somewhere else--like California.

Then, I hop in the car, turn on the radio, and "Drift Away" was coincidentally just starting. And for some goofy reason, I just started thinking, this is my favorite song! And I thought, really, better than Amarillo? And I came to the conclusion, ayup, my favorite song:

Day after day I'm more confused
So I look for the light in the pouring rain
You know that's a game that I hate to lose
I'm feelin' the strain, ain't it a shame

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away

Beginning to think that I'm wastin' time
I don't understand the things I do
The world outside looks so unkind
I'm countin' on you to carry me through

And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's comin' through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy that you've given me
I want you to know I believe in your song
Rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You help me along makin' me strong

I suppose it's possible these things could have something to do with one's general feelings about life.
